2016 - A Fantastic Year of 'Firsts'

Wow, so 2016 has been a unexpectedly wonderful year that couldn't have wished to have been better! I feel so privileged and mega thankful to have photographed so many awesome couples and portraits. (My favourite images from 2016 below). They say that a third of creative businesses fail in the first year... happy to say my business is going strong! Thank you to everyone who has helped me along the way such as my entrepreneurial friends, photography friends, family members, housemates and last but not least, my amazingly supportive partner, Rob!!

With over 7,000 edited images delivered to all the lovely clients I've had the pleasure of working with, 14 weddings documented, 8 Engagement Sessions and loads of portrait sessions and events photographed, I can say it's been a busy, busy year - but I've certainly loved it!

Having looked over this past year, 2016 has been a year full of 'firsts'. So I thought I'd dedicate this blog post to that. Here's a summary of 'firsts' this year.

JK Fine Chocolates Delicious Christmas Truffles & Sauces

Enjoy a chocolatey Christmas with JK Fine Chocolates!

I've been wanting to do a blog post about this for a year and happy to say it's Christmas again (so doesn't feel odd talking about this mid summer!) I had the pleasure of photographing JK Fine Chocolates Christmas 2015 campaign and it's lovely to see the photos this time of year popping up. Jamie (JK) and I have been friends for a couple of years where we first met at a SENSE (Solent Entrepreneurs' Network for Sustainable Enterprises). I remember thinking how Jamie's profession and business sounded so fun and cool: a local chocolatier running a chocolate business!

Tanya & Rhys Australian themed wedding - Christchurch Harbour Hotel

"My new husband and I would like to say a massive thank you to Nisha for capturing our day so beautifully. You put us at ease from the beginning and made us feel very relaxed. I would absolutely recommend Nisha as a photographer for any event, and the photos are gorgeous! Thank you again Nisha - Tanya & Rhys Hunter-Robinson xx"

I'm so happy to have documented Tanya & Rhys' wedding last month at the seaside hotel, Christchurch Harbour Hotel in Dorset. Certainly one of my favourites this autumn as they were just incredibly lovely, warm and welcoming to everyone; it just all felt amazing.

Alice & Rory Alternative Wedding - Portsmouth Wedding Photography - The Square Tower

"Nisha was the perfect photographer for us - she really understood what we wanted and was dedicated to making it happen. So many friends and family members mentioned how friendly and enthusiastic she was on the day and she captured so many lovely moments without us even noticing she was there most of the time! She was the perfect fit for the relaxed wedding we wanted and the photos are beautiful. Thank you so much :)"

One of my favourite weddings over this summer is Alice & Rory's day back in June in Southsea, Portsmouth. It was just so lovely: the vintage chic, laid back wedding was just full of laughter, fun and smiles all day. The guests oozed 'cool' too with an array of vibrant dresses and suave suits. I like the fact it didn't adhere to a strict theme and everyone wore what showed off their personality, and the bride looked stunning in a non-traditional teal dress by Pretty Eccentric with a gorgeous red bouquet by Marilyn's Floral Boutique.

A couple of little facts I learned about Alice is Rory:
1. One of Rory's hobbies is ghost walking in Portsmouth.
2. Alice had chickenpox just days before her wedding day but managed to recover just in time and couldn't look more gorgeous!

Some highlights from the day was the ceremony at The Square Tower where awesome rock music was played while Alice walked down the aisle, guests giggling while Rory goofed around for the mock signing of the registrar, taking bridal portraits of Alice where unbeknownst to me, there were various men in skimpy swimsuits joyfully yelling whilst jumping into the sea right next to us, the four groomsmen picking Rory up and attempting to make it look effortless and the beautifully created wedding cupcakes baked by Rory's mother with little owls and adorable Alice & Rory figurines displayed during the reception at Rosie's Vineyard.

They're so down to earth and genuinely soo lovely, I had a wonderful time. Certainly lots of funny happy snaps from the day, that's for sure!

Thank you Alice & Rory! Many congrats! x

Aniko & John Engagement - Somerset Wedding Photography - Mount Somerset Hotel

"Many thanks for the Sneak Peak photos. They look gorgeous.
We (and our family & friends) really like them.
We both enjoyed the photo session.
You made it so much easier and relaxed. Thank you!"

Happy to be sharing Aniko & John's gorgeous Engagement Session photos from last month with all the vibrant autumn colours and trees. They're getting married 30 September next year and so it was such a lovely idea to photograph their photoshoot this autumn to capture the spirit and colours of their wedding venue, the charming Mount Somerset Hotel, in Taunton. Aniko also told me her favourite season is autumn and I think it's is one of my favourite seasons to photograph Engagements too!

Flower Portraits with Presiyana - Hampshire Lifestyle Photography - Southampton

"Had a lovely photo shoot with
Nisha Haq Photography and I'm loving the outcome. <3
The images are absolutely gorgeous.
Amazing job!"

It's been a fantastic and busy summer with weddings and lifestyle sessions with so many gorgeous photos to share with you all. One of my favourite portrait sessions was with this amazing model, Presiyana Pavlova back in June. We had met at a house party and after noticing the obvious, her striking model looks, the fact she also studies at Southampton Solent University. It wasn't long before we arranged an impromptu photo shoot in Southampton to get those creative juices going!

Nicola & John-Paul Autumn Engagement Session - Hampshire Wedding Photography

"Thanks for the photos, they look great,
especially the ones where we are being silly."

Excited to document Nicola & John-Paul's wedding this Saturday in Portsmouth Registry Office at Mildam House and in Boxgrove Village Hall near Chichester. They've known each other for over 10 years and it's wonderful to witness their bond and admiration they have for each other. I had the pleasure of photographing their Engagement Session only 2 weeks before their wedding date and I love how down-to-earth, goofy and comfortable in front of the camera they were together. It was Nicola's idea to visit Manor Farm Country Park in Bursledon outside Southampton and what a beautiful vast location it was! The autumn trees and colours with the warm golden light made this session one of my favourites to photograph. Certainly love a Sunday Session.  It's amazing knowing there's so many wonderful places to photograph in Hampshire. As much as I love the open landscape and gorgeous romantic photos, its the silly ones that shows they were simply meant to be!

Just by looking at these photos you can tell they're best friends in love.
Eeek can't wait till their wedding tomorrow!

Into the New Forest - Styled Shoot - Hampshire Wedding Photography

The New Forest is a wondrous place with sprawling heathlands, magical ancient woodlands and picturesque English villages that make it a special place. Getting married in such an idyllic location where there are endless opportunities for gorgeous photographs of the bride and groom is a no-brainer. It’s no wonder the New Forest takes centre stage in this elopement styled wedding shoot.

The small towns and villages have a quintessentially English feel with quaint tea rooms and walkways with beautiful New Forest ponies grazing close by. Who wouldn’t want a wedding with ponies in the background of your bridal shots?

For each location in the New Forest, the bride wore a different wedding dress as each dress has its own character that compliments the scenery. All dresses are from the high-street (sourced from ASOS) with the groom's suit from Moss Bros and it goes to show how easy it can be to get a stunning wedding outfit especially for a low-key style wedding.

The style is classic but contemporary; a mixture of fun, flirty, romantic and sophisticated. It’s tricky choosing the one dress, so why not have more than one on your special day!

Thank you guys!

A Summer of Stripes - African Inspired Fashion Photography - Southampton

It's a chilly afternoon in October and I find myself looking through my archive of images and wanted to share this lovely summer editorial inspired by African patterns, in particular, stripes. Loved how these fashion portraits came out. Suga (Sarrah Suga Sillah) did an amazing job modelling these trendy pieces all styled and conceptualised by the talented Alexsandra Nwandu who studied Fashion Styling at Southampton Solent University.

Alexsandra's project looked at different ethnic trends and beauty so it was great to collaborate and work on photo shoots that celebrate women and fashion from minority backgrounds and cultures. The majority of the pieces were sourced from H&M, one of my favourite high-street stores. We may be in autumn but you can definitely rock these pieces this season layered up or on a night out in town.

Photography: Nisha Haq
Fashion Styling & concept: Alexsandra Nwandu
Hair & Make-Up & Model: Sarrah Suga Sillah
Location: Southampton Common
Photographed: April 2016

I don't often do last-minute shoots but when Alexsandra approached me with her idea the day before, I knew this was going to be a good one! I love taking on creative projects, so if you have a team looking for a photographer or looking to build one and collaborate on portrait, beauty or fashion shoots, drop me a message: nishahaqphotography@gmail.com.

Christy & Geofrey Caribbean Wedding - Southampton Wedding Photography

"Nisha photographed our wedding and from what I've seen so far they are absolutely stunning, She's very professional and fun to work with, and Nisha as an individual is very pleasant, we will definitely be using her services again! #happycustomer"

So happy to share these fun photographs of Christy & Geofrey's wedding day back in March 2016. It was so lovely to photograph a Caribbean wedding in Southampton, taking the bride, groom & group portraits in East Park after the ceremony. The group portraits came to be quite spontaneously! It's not every day the photographer becomes the wedding planner on the day on their first solo wedding, but was so happy to have taken these stunning photos. There's lots of little spots in Southampton for pretty portraits and so glad to have thought of this place last minute. Life's all about capturing moments, and in this case making them too! :)

Having started the wedding photography side of my business this year, I was looking forward to book up some dates, especially in Hampshire. It was so lovely to be approached by Christy to photograph her wedding, which happened to be only 6 days before. Of course, I said yes as I was ready to get stuck into wedding photography and was looking forward to using my new Canon 5D Mark III for my first wedding. Not only was their wedding little under a week away, Christy phoned to say she was also 8 months pregnant and that it was a Caribbean wedding. How exciting!

I was overjoyed to photograph Christy & Geofrey's unique wedding.  There wedding was filled with so much passion, full of life and personality. There was so much energy during the ceremony and group photos I couldn't stop snapping away as I wouldn't want to miss an excitable and happy moment. They've been such a pleasure to photograph and get to know that it's been a pretty awesome experience to document such a vibrant day. I think these pictures sums up how much love & laughter there was at their wedding.

Thank you Christy & Geofrey! x

P.s Congratulations on your beautiful baby girl!

Beauty Portraits with Melissa - Hampshire Lifestyle Photography - Southampton

It's been a jam packed summer this year and I've loved meeting and photographing lots of wonderful people. One of the first photoshoots to kick off the summer was photographing this beautiful woman, Melissa, in June. You may have seen a sneak peak from my 1 year anniversary blog post, where I described Melissa as simply captivating.

We had just met only hours before this impromptu photoshoot when she was invited round for a group meal at my flat where we all helped out to make a delicious roast dinner. It was lovely how Melissa took an interest in my wedding photography and that's when I knew she was a lover of the arts. I felt like a schoolkid who had a crush and was shy asking the other person out. When I've photographed gorgeous women in the past, it's usually come up after a few meetings and conversations and then an arranged photoshoot happens. This time round I felt the time had to be 'now' as Melissa was moving to Berlin the week after and I couldn't be sure I'd see her again.

It was then I plucked up the courage and asked if I could take her portrait. She was pleasantly surprised that someone would want to take her portrait and flattered too. I was worried she might say no as she hadn't prepared for her photo to be taken at a moment's notice! In the spirit of embracing life's spontaneous moments, Melissa kindly agreed and mentioned how she'd love to help out with my photography in any way she could, which was touching. After few minutes brushing her hair and touching up her lipstick we were ready to shoot. I hadn't really thought of where to photograph as I was preparing myself for Melissa to say no, then I saw some green trees and bushes outside my bedroom window and quickly thought 'that could look nice'.

I was actually surprised at myself at how stunning the photographs came out. With no preparation, it's hard to tell whether the nerves might affect the shoot but as it was so casual, it just felt so natural taking photos of Melissa. As soon as I met her I had an instinct Melissa would be a natural at being photographed and here are the gorgeous images as proof...

Thank you!

Happy 1 Year Anniversary to Nisha Haq Photography!

I can't believe it's been a whole year since I last set up my photography business in June 2015 ever since receiving a £5,000 grant from Solent LEP, HM Government's Regional Growth Fund. I've been so lucky to turn my photography passion into a fully functional business and fortunate enough to put so many smiles on happy customers!

They say the first year of business is the toughest, which I can certainly say has been hard work. Without determination and drive the hard work pays off and am so blessed to photograph so many amazing people, be invited to a couple's special wedding day and continually develop my photography and meet new people who inspire me to stay strong. It's so worth it!

I'm fortunate to have such a supportive, intelligent and inspirational partner, Rob, who continues to help me back on my feet when I've felt the stresses of running a business, balancing two jobs and a social life too. Having a Navy partner has proved its challenges with often limited contact when at sea, but I feel it only makes us stronger knowing we can get through life's ups and downs together. Having an equally driven partner has only made me want to succeed more.

Some of you may know I have been working full time and have just started a new exciting job as a Marketing Officer / Graphic Designer at Grange Park Opera in Hampshire a few days ago. I'm looking forward to this new venture and will be continuing to run Nisha Haq Photography part time. I think this will be a thrilling new chapter in my life and look forward to applying new marketing & design ideas to my business whilst applying my photography pizzazz to the opera! I simply love the arts.

It's been a crazy year with so many exciting challenges, accomplishments and experiences that it would be an even longer blog post to get through all of them but here are few of my favourite moments from my first year of running a business. Also here's to being a #girlboss! (I've just finished Sophia Amoruso's book on being a girl boss and it's a recommended read!)

SENSE Session - Photography & Branding talk at Southampton Solent University

On 8th March I had the wonderful opportunity to guest speak at SENSE (Solent Entrepreneurs' Network for Sustainable Enterprises) at Southampton Solent University and it was fantastic talking about a subject I love: photography & branding! Working as a graphic designer full time in the day and photographer by night, it was a fun putting together two passions in my life in a presentation, and gave me a good excuse to dig out the various design and photography books/magazines I have on my bookshelf!

The March session 'Using Photography to create a Visual Identity for your Brand' was a great follow on from the February session led by a good friend, graphic designer, Tom Snow Design who talked about creating a brand identity and logo design. It was lovely seeing regulars from the group as well as new faces to learn more about how photography can really uplift or detract from your business branding.

Having graduated from Southampton Solent University in BA (Hons) Photography in 2014 and having been active in entrepreneurship activities such as undertaking the Solent Creatives student course 'Creative Entrepreneurial Freelancing Practice' as well as being successful in the University's student business start up funding; it's been brilliant joining the SENSE network for Solent graduates and being invited to speak at the session. Greg Sandford, Entrepreneur-in-residence at Southampton Solent University thought it would be great to learn from each other's strengths in the group. There are so many talented creative people you network with at Solent, it's a sort of skills sharing network as well. Greg, who organises the SENSE sessions stated:

“I knew I could rely on Nisha to deliver a well-prepared, well-researched and above all thought-provoking session for SENSE members. As with all of our workshops, it’s given me a lot of ideas for my own business.”

I found the photography & branding session really fun to deliver to the group where I covered topics such as decoding well-known brands and their websites, how photography brings a website and marketing materials to life and the power of using images in social media to share and market content. With a mixture of entrepreneurs who have newly-established business and new ideas for businesses in the group, it was interesting having a brainstorming activity looking at their brand values and ways they would like to represent their business. It was eye-opening to see such a range of small businesses such as graphic design, furniture sourcing and interior design, photography, hand-made luxury chocolate, tax advising to name a few in one room.

The session ended on a 'Google Yourself Challenge' to see whether the first hits on Google Images represented their business and visual identity. It was fun and a little nerving to see live what everyone's businesses appeared online to potential customers, but it was all part of the development process.

After the session it was lovely to hear comments such as "It was very motivating & refreshing" and having a lovely buzz and chatter of conversations. Certainly a big smile on my face and everyone who attended!

Solent University graduate and interested in joining the SENSE network in Southampton?
April's session will be led by Lottie Turner, Risk manager at NHS Trust and Business Manager at Tom Snow Design where she'll be giving a talk about improving presentation skills for your business. Come along to the 6pm session at Southampton Solent University on Tuesday 12th April 2016. More info here.

Follow SENSE on Facebook and Twitter for updates.

P.S Thanks Greg Sandford to taking these snaps of me during my presentation.

Thanks guys for your support - cheeky after session drinks & food at Tapas Barcelona! :)

Independent Woman - Spring Monochrome Fashion Photography - Southampton

As it's Women's History Month and was International Woman's Day on Monday, it was only fitting to post this gorgeous shoot 'Independent Woman'. I was even listening to Destiny's Child whilst editing these pictures to get my sass on!

Love this throwback shoot from April 2014 for a Spring monochrome trend inspired shoot taken in Southampton Solent University studios on my photography degree. I worked with such a talented team, it was certainly a fun and creative shoot. Kristina Guaggenti provided her wonderful hair & make up artistry and helped style the shoot and Yaz Wall was a fabulous getting into character and showing her fierce fashion looks in these outfits. Doesn't she look amazing!?

One of my favourite trends is monochrome and every spring season there's usually some striking black and white outfit that I adore. I'm loving the monochrome pieces in Spring 2016 ready-to-wear collection by Calvin Klein, Salvatore Ferragamo, Michael Kors and Givenchy (and also Stella McCartney for their colours & pleats and Alexander McQueen for their feminine tailored English pieces).

The garments were sourced from high street shops from the likes of Asos, River Island, New Look, Zara, Miss Selfridge and H&M (pretty much all my fave shops!) with a helping hand from Kristina on Zara pieces. Kristina also hand crafted the embellished eyebrows (see below) which is amazing. Also this was Yaz's first fashion shoot in the studio and she totally rocked it. She's such a natural in front of the camera. I'll have to get some more wonderful portraits of her!

Thank you Kristina & Yaz :) This post goes to celebrating all those wonderful women out there and being confident in what they do. Also a power suit does wonders to get that fierce and 'independent woman' look.

Photography & Styling: Nisha Haq
Hair, Make Up & Styling: Kristina Guaggenti
Model: Yaz Wall

Get your sass on! :) x

Happy Mother's Day! - Somerset Lifestyle Photography

It was a happy coincidence that my mother and I met up for Mother's Day weekend this year and I'm so glad we spent some quality mother and daughter time in the Somerset Countryside. I treated my lovely mother to a 2 night weekend away at Lord Poulett Arms in Hinton St George and it's so gorgeous here. The locals are so friendly and the Inn is beautifully decorated, it's been a splendid weekend so far and we've still got Mother's Day lunch to go!

Yesterday we decided to visit the magnificent National Trust Montacute House and it was lovely morning seeing all the Tudor portraits and rooms. Here's a little snap from the day.   :)

Hope everyone is having a wonderful Mothers Day with their families in the UK!

Mark & Debashrita - London Hindu Fusion Wedding - Part 1

It was such an amazing and eye-opening experience to be invited to Mark's and Debashrita's two day fusion wedding extravaganza in London back in November 2011. Being invited to the whole day's exciting flow of events; from gorgeous Deb getting ready in her stunning red Asian wedding gown to the bride's side of the family not letting the groomsmen enter without any offerings, then to the vibrant colourful ceremony and emotional exchanging of vows. I don't think I've seen so much colour, excitement and happiness in one go, which is brilliant!

It was wonderful witnessing the entire wedding as a guest and taking snaps along the way too. Also as a family friend (Deb suggested the name 'Nisha' when I was born - so thank you!), it was a joyous occasion to be surrounded by friends and family.

I must admit, this has been one of the most unique and exciting weddings I have been to with a fusion of Indian Hindu and Nigerian Christian ceremonies back to back - it was both a celebration of Mark + Deb's love as well as a synthesis of cultures.

Congratulations to four years of marriage and the birth of a beautiful baby boy! x

2015 - What a whirlwind of a year!

So this is the first time I’ve looked back and collated my favourite photos I took over a year, and what a fantastic year 2015 has been! Reflecting over the wonderful memories I have of the past 12 months, I can certainly say I feel proud and privileged to do what I do, and meet the amazing people who make these images come to life. Last year was a rollercoaster, both personally and professionally. Here are a few key highlights that made 2015:

  • In February, being named Finalist for OneEyeland Photography International Awards for my fine art nude photographs.
  • April, I saw my partner commissioned in the Royal Navy as a Warfare Officer and couldn’t be more proud.
  • In May, after being encouraged by Southampton Solent University to pitch my photography business, received £5,000 grant from Solent LEP under HM Government's Regional Growth Fund.
  •  June is when I registered my business, took all the scary steps of officially starting my business whilst starting a new day job working as a graphic designer.
  • In September I bought my first ever car after passing my test in March and can’t fathom how much freedom this gives me to travel and explore.
  • In December, I was invited by Southampton Solent University as a guest speaker and delivered my first business presentation talking about setting up a business and my experiences so far to college students. It was also this month that my partner and I celebrated our 4th anniversary of being together and couldn’t be more elated.
In 2015 I've been lucky enough to photograph in lots of beautiful places such as Naples, Sorrento, Capri, Devon, Somerset, Buckinghamshire and of course the beautiful county I live in, Hampshire. I would like to say a huge thank you to every single person I’ve had the pleasure of photographing and working with on projects. Looking back over 2015, I certainly feel blessed with what’s been achieved and feeling confident and happy within.

Beginning 2016, I feel excited for lots more amazing experiences, friendships, passions and projects to come...

Nisha x
